The difference between Darren’s earlier incarnations and now is the maturity in his written song and the delivery of them. Darren Jack’s powerful vocals are more refined and already noted in his youth as one of Australia's top blues guitarists; he is experimenting across genres while retaining his true faith to the blues.
Jeff Duff seemed out of step with Australia in 1978 - so he left for England. Whether or not England was necessarily any more ready for Jeff than Australia in 1978 is a moot point. The Sex Pistols had flared all too briefly but set the course for pop music for the foreseeable future - punk ruled and England was definitely no place for the squeamish. But then, Jeff Duff had never been squeamish. Long before the androgyny of Bowie and Lou Reed had filtered across Australia, Duff was already playing out cross-gender roles - after all, hadn’t he turned up to the audition for Kush, by his own admission, wearing “a diamond tiara, body-hugging mini-skirt and matching stilettos!?” England, though was all torn t-shirts, zips and safety pins. Would Duff’s brand of self-deprecating foppery find a niche?

The DeVilles have gone through a few different phases in the past 11 years. Originally a hard hitting Texas blues band, playing tunes from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Pete’s song writing, singing and guitar playing have evolved into something that can’t quite be described or put under genre titles, but still remain comfortable in the Blues / Roots camp.

The power trio features vocalist-guitarist Ben Cue, Bassist Daniel Paroissien and drummer Talen Galbraith – And if that last name sounds familiar it’s because this band has a healthy connection with one of the regions best-loved blues bands, ‘Blue Heat’, with both drummer and bassist being related to Graeme & Barry Galbraith. With a Debut EP under their wings, 2011/12 is shaping up to be big, with Blackwood Jack set to expand its horizons.
